About Palmetto Trail

Palmetto Trail

The Palmetto Trail is an ambitious project that weaves through urban and remote areas across the entire state of South Carolina, covering diverse ecosystems and offering a multitude of outdoor recreation opportunities. The trail starts in the mountainous northwest at Oconee State Park and extends to the Lowcountry tidal lands, highlighting South Carolina’s natural beauty and historical significance. Stretching over multiple terrains, the Palmetto Trail covers mountainous ridges, dense forests, swamps, and barrier islands. Along the way, outdoor enthusiasts can find opportunities for hiking, biking, and horseback riding while passing historical sites and remote natural environments. Due to its extensive reach, the trail offers ecological diversity, showcasing the hardwood and pine forests, flowing rivers, and coastal habitats that make up South Carolina’s landscape. Significant historical sections take trail-goers past remnants of the state’s early settlement history and landmarks from the Civil War. The trail remains a work-in-progress, with completed sections being particularly popular among locals and tourists alike for both day-trips and multi-day adventures.
